3rd JSC Talks “My Study and Work Experience Abroad” Is Held

On the evening of 19 October, the 3rd JSC Talks on the theme of My Study and Work Experience Abroad was successfully held in Linglong Auditorium to encourage and help the freshmen to gain a global vision, enhance their critical thinking ability and competitiveness, and make a good plan for their academic development. Prof. Zhao Cheng, a Chinese American full professor of mathematics at JSC and tenured professor of Indiana State University, USA was invited as guest speaker to share his personal experience of studying, working and living in the USA. Shen Quanli, a teacher of Mathematics and applied mathematics and the 2023 cohort students attended. Prof. Chang Xiaomei, Vice Dean, JSC hosted the event.

Chang Xiaomei first introduced Prof. Zhao Cheng to the audience and extended her warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to him for his presence.

Prof. Zhao Cheng shared his experience of studying abroad focusing on broadening horizons, importance of platforms and enhancing global competence. He advised the students to set eyes on the future and make long-term plans and emphasised the significance of keeping abreast with the new requirements of the new era. He also talked about the differences between foreign and domestic universities in terms of talent cultivation, education system, curriculum setting and teaching methods, pointing out the needs of improving comprehensive quality and English communication skills. Then he analysed the impact of the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) on the fields of applied mathematics, applied physics, applied chemistry and biological sciences with examples and recommended a development pathway by building a sound internationalised knowledge system and enhancing international competitiveness to the students.

In the Q & A session, the students aired their views on personal development freely and actively, asking questions concerning the articulation model, applying for postgraduate study and studying overseas, and adjusting to a foreign academic environment, etc. To each question Prof. Zhao Cheng and the other JSC teachers present replied patiently in detail and shared some hands-on experience as well as suggestions in addition. He advised all the freshmen to make the most of JSC’s international faculty and atmosphere, study English well, and participate in various cultural exchange activities so as to get adapted to cultural differences in advance.

This event is aimed to stimulate the students’ innovative thinking and interest in further study abroad and build up a strong sense of internationalisation. It is also meant to help the students make an academic plan and set a clearer goal for their future development ahead of time by clarifying the “3+1+1” Model for the college students. Meanwhile, it will play a positive role in improving the quality of the joint education and talent cultivation and lay a solid foundation for the students’ overall growth and development.
