A lecture on overseas study was held recently in R.301, Dianzi Building to provide an overall guidance on academic and career development for the students who desire to pursue further study at the Australian National University (ANU). Professor Bryan Wang and two of his teaching assistants, Qiyu Zhou and Dongchang Liu from ANU and Professor Zhao Cheng from Joint Science College (JSC) were invited as guest speakers. The 2021 cohort students leaving for ANU this July and the students of 2022 and 2023 cohorts interested in studying at ANU in near future attended the lecture hosted by the student counsellor, Ms. Tao Huimin.

At the start, Prof. Wang elaborated on the students’ academic development at ANU including studying for a doctorate at the Mathematical Sciences Institute, ANU College of Science, the GPA and other requirements for transferring to a Ph.D. program, the various scholarships available, strategies for selecting courses during the undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and how to get better adapted to the language and learning environment. Then, Prof. Zhao stressed the importance of overseas study to personal academic and career development and that of expanding international vision and intercultural communication skills while studying abroad. He encouraged the students to meet challenges with resilience and enterprising mindset. Finally, the two teaching assistants shared their personal experiences regarding application for admission, what they saw and felt as well as their life insights and reflections in Australia. They advised the students who have a desire to work toward a Ph.D. at ANU to plan their development paths and contact the supervisors for research projects in advance.

This lecture serves as a high-quality interaction platform for the students going to ANU soon and the freshmen and sophomores who intend to study abroad in one or two years to gain a deeper understanding of overseas study and life. It is also of great help for them to develop a clearer plan for studying abroad. Besides, it plays an active role in improving JSC’s international educational performance and the quality of talent cultivation. The college will continue to mobilise resources and channels to improve effectiveness of the cooperative education with ANU.
