On the morning of 6 June, the 2nd Graduation Ceremony of SDU-ANU Joint Science College (JSC) was held in Linglong Auditorium. Prof. Liu Jianya, Vice President, Shandong University (SDU); President, Shandong University, Weihai (SDUW); Dean, JSC, Prof Joan Leach, Acting Dean, ANU College of Science and the JSC graduating students at ANU attended online. Members of the JSC leadership, winners of “The 2024 SDU-ANU Joint Science College Award for My Favourite Teacher Elected by Graduating Students”, all the JSC faculty and staff and the Class of 2024 participated in person. Sun Pengcheng, Party Dean, JSC hosted the ceremony.
Liu Jianya extended his warm congratulations and sincere wishes to the Class of 2024 on behalf of the university. He spoke approvingly of their achievements in such fields as scientific research innovation and social practice in the past four years. He hoped that they will bear the college motto, “Aspire in pursuit of knowledge, reason in seeking for truth” in mind and be innovative and respectful. He put forward four points to them: keep faith and meet challenges head-on; stay committed to their abiding aspirations to explore and innovate with a down-to-earth attitude and scientific method; count their blessings and let gratitude help others feel valued in addition to themselves; bear in mind the country's most fundamental interests and strive to become the backbone of the country in future.
Prof. Joan Leach expressed her heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2024 on their successful completion of undergraduate studies at Shandong University. She highly praised them for having demonstrated unwavering dedication, resilience, and insatiable keenness for knowledge throughout their time at JSC. She shared her hopes with the students: as future leaders of society, the world is in need of their unique talents, ideas, and perspectives. And she is confident that they will embrace the diversity of thought, seek out collaborations that transcend boundaries, and approach every challenge with empathy and compassion.
Lv Guangshi, Executive Dean, JSC offered his congratulations to the Class of 2024 on behalf of the college. He also thanked all the teachers and parents for their dedication to cultivating the students. Having reviewed the achievements the students made while studying at JSC, he expressed his hopes that the whole Class will stay true to their original aspirations, keep their missions in mind and strive to be pioneers, pacesetters and contributors at the forefront of the times.
Prof. Bai Ming, Vice Dean and winner of “The 2024 SDU-ANU Joint Science College Award for My Favourite Teacher Elected by Graduating Students” recalled the past four years when he and the students taught and learnt from each other. He encouraged them to keep their confidence to overcome difficulties and their interest in science and aspirations for exploring mysteries, and go ahead to shine brightly on a broad life stage.
Wang Jiajun, 2020 cohort applied physics major student and Liu Yi, 2020 cohort biology major student at ANU delivered a speech onsite and online respectively as student representatives. They both recalled the good time spent at JSC and expressed their feelings of reluctance to part and gratefulness to SDU and JSC with which they promised to live up to the education in the college and make contributions to the society. Current student representative, Liu Yihang, 2021 cohort applied physics major student extended best wishes to the graduating students in his speech. He expressed his determination to regard them as role models, carry forward JSC’s fine tradition, and keep working hard and improving himself so as to earn more honour for the college in future.
The winners of My Favourite Teacher Elected by Graduating Students, Excellent Graduates of Shandong Province in 2024 and Excellent Graduates of Shandong University in 2024 were awarded with prizes.
In the end, the singing in chorus of Shandong University Song brought the curtain down on the graduation ceremony.
