SDU-ANU Joint Science College invited teacher and student representatives to a series of discussions to get an overview of the current operation of undergraduate teaching and further strengthen the teaching management in the college Reading Room, Dianzi Building on Nov 3 and Nov 4, 2021. Vice Dean Bai Ming hosted the discussions. Executive Dean Lv Guangshi, Vice Dean Chang Xiaomei, the coordinators of the major courses and Academic English course as well as the director of JSC Academic Affairs Office, Sun Xiaochen attended the discussions.
At the discussions, the students fully communicated with the teachers on their problems, difficulties and confusions in study. Some freshmen expressed their worries about the mathematics courses because they were still not used to the new way of learning in the university. While some chemistry majors felt difficult in learning the courses taught by the ANU professors in English due to the differences in language and teaching method. Lv Guangshi told them to learn to use the standardized mathematical language, adapt themselves to the mathematical way of thinking and accurately grasp the mathematics theorem and definitions. Bai Ming suggested that they should try to raise their English language proficiency, take an active learning and improve their adaptability to different teaching environments so as to lay a solid foundation for the future scientific research. Zhou Junxia, an Academic English teacher, explained the concept of curriculum design and learning methods of academic English course. She encouraged the students to enhance the communicating and writing skills to better cope with the internationalised life and study. In the end the students asked questions on how to handle the pressure, competitions, postgraduate entrance examination, studying abroad, etc.
The discussions have strengthened the communication between teachers and students and helped the college better understand the situation of the current learning and teaching to improve the quality of teaching management and service.
