On the evening of November 26th, the 5th Scientific Research Causerie was held by Joint Science College (JSC) in R. 304, Songxin Building to foster a stronger atmosphere of research and innovation and build an international platform for academic exchange. The ANU math teaching team, Murray Thomas Batchelor, Svetlana Makarova and their teaching assistants were invited as guests. Over 30 students from different colleges on Weihai campus participated in the event hosted by Ma Wenxuan, 2023 cohort student.
The event was themed on “The Path of Interdisciplinary Research in Fundamental Sciences”. The four ANU teachers, drawing on their own experiences in interdisciplinary research combining Mathematics and Physics, shared insights on scientific research in a professional but humorous way. They also explained how to handle setbacks and challenges in an academic career, as well as strategies for maintaining motivation for innovation, and patiently answered students’ questions concerning academic development, science and innovation projects, employment and further education. In the following Opera Face-Painting session, Chinese and Australian teachers and students used simple symbols, vibrant colors, and distinctive patterns to paint the traditional Chinese opera masks. This hands-on activity allowed participants to appreciate the charm of Chinese theatrical culture up close and strengthened their communication and friendship through the exchange.
This event has opened a window of knowledge on interdisciplinary research in fundamental sciences for the students, showed the infinite charm and prospects of multidisciplinary integration, and brought the relationship between Chinese and Australian teachers and students closer through exchange and interaction. It has also injected new momentum into enriching campus cultural life, promoting the fine traditional Chinese culture, and supporting students in their journey of scientific research.
