2023 Open Day Is Successfully Held

On 2 July, SDU-ANU Joint Science College (JSC) held 2023 Open Day successfully in Linglong Auditorium. Prof. Liu Jianya, Vice President of Shandong University, President of Shandong University, Weihai and Dean of JSC, Prof. Sally Wheeler, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University, Prof. Kiaran Kirk, Dean of ANU College of Science, Prof. Sasha Mikheyev, Associate Dean of ANU College of Science, Prof. Joseph Hope, Associate Dean of ANU Research School of Physics, Prof. James Borger, Associate Dean of ANU Mathematical Sciences Institute, A/Prof. Alexey Glushenkov, ANU Research School of Chemistry, Dr. Marcin Adamski, Senior Lecturer of ANU Research School of Biology attended online. Mr. Jay Poria, Head of International Relations and PartnershipsSTEMM, ANU College of Science; ANU College of Health & Medicine; ANU College of Computing, Engineering & Cybernetics, Mr. Arthur Xu, Regional Manager, International Relations and Partnerships – STEMM, ANU College of Science; ANU College of Health & Medicine; ANU College of Computing, Engineering & Cybernetics, the leaders from JSC, Executive Dean, Prof. Lv Guangshi, Party Dean Liang Fengjun, Vice Dean, Prof. Chang Xiaomei, Vice Dean, Prof. Bai Ming and Deputy Party Dean Wang Wei, JSC faculty and staff members and over eighty student candidates and their parents participated in person in the event.


Prof. Liu Jianya introduced briefly Shandong University and SDU-ANU Joint Science College. He stated that the four undergraduate disciplines, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology offered in JSC are all strong disciplines with deep foundation on both sides. They are the results from the joint endeavour of the two world renowned universities with complementary strengths. JSC upholds the college motto of “Aspire in Pursuit of Knowledge, Reason in Seeking for Truth” and is committed to cultivating talents for the new era with not only a strong sentiment to love families and the motherland, global outlook and competence but also the ability to cope with future complicated changes and issues. Prof. Sally Wheeler introduced ANU’s academic standards, comprehensive strengths and the joint education programme between the two universities. She encouraged the student candidates to choose JSC for the advantageous education resources, more discoveries in science and greater success in their life.


Prof. Kiaran Kirk introduced the collaborative articulation mode between the two universities and the latest development of ANU College of Science; Prof. Lv Guangshi introduced the advantages of the collaboration, the enrollment and talent cultivation quality from the aspects of attending graduate schools, employment prospects, academic research and so on; Prof. Sasha Mikheyev focused on the details of “3+1+1” model and ANU’s teaching in JSC. Besides, ANU professors and lecturers from the four disciplines introduced the characteristics and advantages of studying Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in ANU and the future career orientation. Finally, Chen Xiaowen, a 2019 cohort student representative coming back from one-year study in ANU shared her study and life in ANU with the student candidates and their parents present.


In the Q&A session, Jay Poria and Arthur Xu from ANU together with Prof. Bai Ming and Ms. Wang Wei from JSC answered questions by the candidates and parents concerning academic development and overseas study, etc. Following that, the candidates and parents attended Coffee Time voluntarily in R. 107, Dianzi Building for further consultation on more details of the application process, major selection and teaching mode, etc. They also visited the campus and the college building for a general view of the college education condition.

The event was broadcast live via Sina-Weibo platform and was watched by nearly 5,000 people. It is a great success as it has provided the candidates and their parents with an in-depth understanding of the characteristics and advantages of the college education and enhanced the mutual communication between the college and the candidates and parents.
