On the morning of 2 July, SDU-ANU Joint Science College held 2022 Open Day online successfully in Linglong Auditorium. Prof. Liu Jianya, Vice President of Shandong University, President of Shandong University, Weihai and Dean of JSC, Prof. Sally Wheeler, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University, Prof. Kiaran Kirk, Dean of ANU College of Science, Prof. Sasha Mikheyev, Associate Dean of ANU College of Science, Prof. Joseph Hope, Associate Dean of ANU Research School of Physics, Prof. James Borger, Associate Dean of ANU Mathematical Sciences Institute, A/Prof. Alexey Glushenkov, ANU Research School of Chemistry, Dr. Marcin Adamski, Senior Lecturer of ANU Research School of Biology, Mr. Jay Poria, Manager of International Relations and Partnerships, ANU College of Science, and Mr. Arthur Xu, Regional Manager of International Relations and Partnerships, ANU College of Science attended online. The leaders from JSC, Executive Dean, Prof. Lv Guangshi, Party Dean Liang Fengjun, Vice Dean, Prof. Chang Xiaomei, Vice Dean, Prof. Bai Ming and Vice Party Dean Wang Wei, and all the staff members, student and their parent representatives participated in the event.
First of all, Liang Fengjun introduced the guests and delivered a welcome speech. Then Prof. Sally Wheeler introduced ANU’s academic standards and comprehensive strengths, saying that ANU is a diverse university ranking the top in Australia for many years in QS World University Rankings. Students and faculty members from around the world work together on world-leading researches. Prof. Liu Jianya introduced briefly Shandong University and SDU-ANU Joint Science College. He stated that the four undergraduate disciplines, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology offered in JSC are all strong disciplines with deep foundation on both sides. They are also fundamental disciplines to which our country is attaching great importance at present. JSC upholds the college motto of “Aspire in Pursuit of Knowledge, Reason in Seeking for Truth” and is committed to cultivating talents for the new era with not only a strong sentiment to love families and the motherland, global outlook and competence but also the ability to cope with future complicated changes and issues.
Prof. Kiaran Kirk introduced the collaborative articulation mode between the two universities and the latest development of ANU College of Science; Prof. Lv Guangshi introduced the advantages of the collaboration, the enrollment and employment prospects; Prof. Sasha Mikheyev focused on ANU’s faculty and the details of “3+1+1” model. Besides, ANU professors and lecturers from the four disciplines introduced the characteristics and advantages of studying Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology and the future career orientation.
Following the speeches, a pre-made video by the senior students was played showing the participants around the beautiful campus and the study and living environment, such as the Majia Mountain, sea, lakes and forests, as well as the library, gymnasium, students’ canteens and dormitories. Some current students and parents also shared their opinions on the college and recognition and confidence in the college's joint degree program with ANU in the pre-made videos. In the last Q&A session, Prof. Chang Xiaomei, Prof. Bai Ming and Ms. Wang Wei from JSC together with Mr. Jay Poria and Mr. Arthur Xu from ANU answered questions by the candidates in detail concerning the college application process, major selection, teaching mode, cultural atmosphere, overseas study, etc.
The event was broadcast live on Xinhua Live Cloud platform by Weihai Evening News Media and was watched by over 21,000 people. It is a great success as it has provided candidates and their parents with an in-depth understanding of the characteristics and advantages of the college and the disciplines, enhanced the mutual communication between the college and the candidates and their parents.
