On the afternoon of 10 April, the 2nd Culture Roam focusing on Chinese culture embodied in intangible cultural heritage was held in R. 107, Dianzi Building to promote the interactions between the ANU visiting teachers and the college teachers and students and encourage the students to take the initiative to explore cultures of different nations to expand their global vision. Associate professor Megan Head and her teaching assistants were invited to join the session. Deputy Party Dean Wang Wei and some student representatives attended the event hosted by Li Dantong, a 2023 cohort applied physics major student.
The sharing session began with music playing such as Myth, Jasmine, and Green Flower Porcelain performed by the pipa, erhu and guqin, the traditional Chinese stringed musical instruments. Then the students vividly introduced and displayed the rich traditional Chinese culture embodied in the cultures of tea and Tuan Shan, a round silk fan from the aspects of their classification, history and using skills. In the process of making fans and fazan, traditional Chinese-style hairpin for the traditional dress of the Han Chinese people, the ANU teachers and the participating students collaborated actively in four groups with their own creative ideas and understanding following the volunteer students’ introduction and demonstration. In the end, the teamwork resulted in elegant handicrafts combining individual insights with group effort that fully showcase the participants’ aesthetic talents and creative spirit. They are the best witness of the wonderful opportunity for intercultural exchange.
This cultural experience has further enhanced the communication and exchange between the ANU teaching visitors and the college students. In addition to boosting the students’ understanding of the traditional Chinese culture and sense of pride towards it, this activity has enabled the ANU teachers to experience and learn about Chinese culture firsthand, which will ultimately be good for the high-quality development of the joint programme between Shandong University and the Australian National University.
