On the afternoon of 17 April, the 2nd Scientific Research Causerie was successfully held in R. 107, Dianzi Building to promote an in-depth exchange between JSC teachers and students and the ANU visiting teachers, cultivate the students’ innovative thinking, and foster a thriving academic environment for research in the college. ANU biology teacher, Ivan Vinogradov was invited as guest speaker. Wang Wei, Deputy Party Dean was present and the student representatives participated in the event hosted by Yang Jieni, 2022 cohort applied physics major student.

Ivan shared his study and research experiences as well as his own insights into the field of biology. Then he explained the concepts and hypotheses related to evolutionary biology, such as animal intelligence and animal reproduction with visual charts, unveiling the mystery of biological evolution step by step. He also demonstrated with animations how populations of mosquito fish achieve progress in collective intelligence by learning, relearning, self-exploration, and self-control. During the coffee break, the students asked questions one after another and engaged in lively discussions with Ivan. The entire event was a perfect blend of professionality and interest.

This event is conducive to expanding the students’ knowledge in biological sciences, enhancing mutual understanding between the teachers and students of the two universities, and stimulating the students’ strong interest in exploring biological evolution, which speaks volumes for the distinctive features and advantages of the Chinese-foreign cooperative education. Besides, it is helpful for the students to improve their capacity to conduct scientific research and interdisciplinary communication, and to lay a solid foundation for further study in a broader scientific context.
