On the evening of November 11th, the 3rd Scientific Research Causerie was jointly held by Student Affairs Office, SDUW and Joint Science College (JSC) in R. 107, Songxin Building, with the aim to practice the SDU’s educational philosophy of “Study at SDU, Grow up Happily”, foster a stronger atmosphere of scientific research and innovation, and provide the campus students with an international platform for academic and research exchange. Chi Tao, Director, Student Affairs Office, SDUW, Sun Pengcheng, Party Dean, JSC, and Wang Wei, Deputy Party Dean, JSC attended the event. The ANU physics teachers, Wei Wen Wong, Chaohao Chen and their teaching assistants were invited as guests. Chen Xiaowen, 2019 cohort student now studying at ANU, joined online and 25 students from different colleges on Weihai campus participated in the event hosted by Ma Wenxuan, 2023 cohort applied chemistry major student.

This session was themed Discipline Exploration and the Path of Scientific Research and began with an opening speech by Chi Tao, who first extended a warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to the teaching team from the Australian National University. She encouraged students to make full use of the Scientific Research Causerie as an international platform for academic and cultural exchange, urging them to actively engage with ANU teachers to expand their global knowledge and explore their research paths.

The four ANU teachers took turns sharing their research journeys and personal development paths with the students. Chen Xiaowen, the college’s first graduate and a current master’s student at ANU, shared her thoughts and experiences based on her academic journey and research stories. During the interactive part, students expressed that they had gained a lot from the event and engaged in in-depth discussions with the ANU visitors concerning studies, research, and future plans for studying abroad. The atmosphere was relaxing and lively.

During the sachet-making session, Chinese and Australian teachers and students selected aromatic herbs and crafted sachets by hand. This hands-on activity allowed them to experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture up close, while also fostering greater communication and friendship through practice.

Sun Pengcheng delivered the closing speech. He noted that the insights shared by the guest speakers were thorough yet easy to grasp, giving students helpful direction for their future research endeavors. He encouraged students to integrate their academic studies with personal interests, stay curious to explore the unknown so as to lay a good foundation for future academic and professional development.

This event has effectively facilitated communication and exchange between Chinese and Australian teachers and students and fueled students’ enthusiasm for scientific research, which speaks volumes for the college’s distinctive features of Sino-foreign cooperative education and its international advantages. In the future, the college will be committed to creating broader platforms for exchange and cultivating talents with a global perspective and cross-cultural communication skills.
